Day 179 - nearing halfway!

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Day 178

Pictured below is one of the 4 felt coats that I recently designed for a public art performance by Vanessa Kwan called Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver. The coats are made from 1/4 " industrial wool felt and weigh a ton (but look light as air!) If you are in the Central Public Library area between now and Sunday (last day of the Olympics) or during the Paralympics, check out this fun artwork. Get a free postcard of Vancouver (minus the skyline) and hold it up anywhere to create your own Vancouver scene. You can submit photos (and see other photos) on the website: www.vancouvervancouvervancouver.com

Days 176 & 177

Today's accessory is a skein of metallic yarn that never quite got crocheted into something more practical. It is paper-clipped together. For those of you who have ordered (or are still planning to order) a Super! Surprise!, fear not - they will all have a much more finished appeal.

Yesterday started with an outing to this massive clothing recycling plant. What a wild place! They literally have bales of clothing that have been sorted into different categories (stacked behind me), much of which will get sent to Africa. It was astonishing to see how much consumer 'waste' of this nature is produced daily even in a small city like ours. And this is only one plant - I'm sure there are more.

Day 171 - schedule change

I think I may have been a bit over ambitious with my scheduling of the makeshift space for this week and next. What was I thinking? Anyways, I'm changing it. I will be there today but not tomorrow (Friday). And I will be there again on Saturday. I hope this does not throw anyone off. Also next week I will only be there on Thursday and Saturday. Sound ok?

No tripod today - a makeshift self portrait for today's post.

My Bright Light projection at 6 E. Cordova (right next to the makeshift project space)

And then over to the Light Bar where good times were had by all.

I had fun Dj-ing for this many people!

Then Christine played their premier set to a very packed house.

Days 164 & 165 - Bright Light opening tonight

If you are in Vancouver and you are not going to the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics tonight, come to Gastown for the opening of Bright Light! I have a projection set up at 6 E. Cordova Street and will be celebrating at Instant Coffee's Light Bar from 7pm onwards. Vancouver Band, Christine, will be debuting at 11pm. Hope to see you there.

Yesterday's mad scientist look after a day of setting up my projection for Bright Light.

Vancouver is starting to get a little crazy in anticipation of the Olympics. If you have plans to be here in our fair city during this time, please visit me at the Makeshift Project Space in Gastown (see schedule in side panel). There are a lot of great shows happening in the neighborhood, including Bright Light, which is a series of light-themed artworks and events happening throughout February and March.

Day 156 - Super! Surprise! Round 3

I had a very early start today - up at 4am so that I could be at the CTV studio at 5am! It's still dark out an hour after I've come home!

Someone recently pointed out to me that I didn’t ever post what the original
Super! Surprises! were. (I had pictures in the newsletter but not on the blog.) It then occurred to me that I didn’t post the recent Super! Surprises! either! So in case you were curious about it, here is what they were:

The Happy Mini Surprise

The copper-leafed macaroni necklace is the perfect accompaniment to any outfit. Its flirty yet sophisticated style says, "I don't like to take myself too seriously but I do know what's going on". And, in an emergency situation you could probably even eat it. (I won't take any responsibility for the toxicity of the adhesive or sealing agent, however, so please, eat at your own risk).

The Win/Win Surprise

Equipping you with a plethora of shapes and pieces, this boiled wool accessory can be worn in approximately one godzillion ways. Even the pouch it comes in can be added on using this (self-proclaimed) ingenious snap-together sausage-link-like system!

The Adventurer Surprise

This Cashmere/Wool Wrap is lined with a woven Bamboo fabric and has one armhole, combining a classic look with a versatile design. Today it's a wrap, tomorrow it's a scarf!

Round 3 of the Super! Surprise! Program has started so you have until February 28th to sign up. Click here for more info.

Day 155 - a smurfly day

I don't know, it just happened.

PS: You can see me on Canada AM tomorrow on CTV

Days 153 & 154 - plus today's sunrise

There's no denying my outfit today is odd. All I can say is "you can't win them all" and "I don't have all day". If you see me out in the world today, feel free to point and laugh.

Did anyone in Vancouver see the sunrise today? Awwwwwwwwesome.
